Lowcountry Pumpout Locations

Dumping sanitary waste off a vessel can have an impact out of proportion to the actual volume. Compared to the size of our coastal waters it may not seem like much, but one weekend boater dumping sewage into the water is the equivalent of discharging 10,000 people’s waste through a sewage treatment plant. The concentration of sanitary waste contaminates water and endangers swimmers and marine life with viruses and bacteria that can cause serious illnesses.
Providing the public with information about boater waste and its disposal is part of the Okatie Watershed 319 project to improve the Okatie River on a long-term basis. It has received funding for 60 percent of the costs from the SC Department of Environmental Control (DHEC), using funds from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The rest is being provided by the project’s local partners.

Help keep our Lowcountry waters clean for your boating, fishing and swimming!

Instead of dumping the sanitary waste (sewage) from your boat, use one of the twelve nearby pumpout stations. Look for signs like this one to find a pumpout station:

Why pump, not dump?
  1. Dumping sanitary waste is illegal. You could get a Federal fine of up to $2,000.
  2. Sewage adds bacteria and viruses to the water that can make it unsafe for smimming.
  3. Bacteria in sewage pollute shellfish beds. Fewer shellfish beds mean fewer shellfish and higher prices!
  4. Holding tank chemicals like formaldehyde and chlorine are also dumped with the sewage.
  5. It is gross! Who wants to see human waste in the water?
